What's New?
Volvo Car India has launched the petrol mild-hybrid version of the 2022 S90 sedan and XC60 SUV in India at an ex-showroom price of Rs. 66.9 lakh for the S90 while the XC60 too has been priced at Rs. 65.9 lakh. Moreover, Volvo is also offering a three-years warranty and service shceme at an additonal cost of Rs. 75,000 for both models. The move comes in the direction of Volvo's shift towards cleaner technologies as the Swedish carmaker is gearing up to make its transitions from diesel to petrol powertrains and eventually to an all-electric range by the end of this decade. In fact by 2030, expect to see every model in Volvo's line-up to have an electrified variant as well.
The Volvo S90 petrol mild-hybrid model is also offers similar features seen on the XC60. It also gets subtle design updates like the new grille which now sports the brand's new logo, tweaked front and rear bumpers with a new chrome line, new alloy wheels, and new body colours. Then, it is powered by the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder motor coupled with the 48-volt mild-hybrid electric motor and in the same state of tune. So the powertrian churns out 247 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque while the engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Both models will be sold in India as company's knocked down (CKD) units and while the Volvo XC60 will take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, upcoming Audi Q5 facelift and Jaguar F-Pace among others, the S90 sedan will go up against models like the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF among others.
Expert Review on Volvo S90
Pros
- Sharp Styling
- Spacious Rear Seat
- Comfortable Over Long Distances
Cons
- Pricey Over Rear Wheel Drive Rivals
- Lacks Outright Performance
- No Option Of A Diesel Engine
Underneath its sheet metal, the S90 employs Volvo's SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform, which made its debut with the XC90. This means a transverse front-drive layout, with unequal-length control arms in the front suspension and a multilink layout in the rear. The car just glides over everything and that's when you keep your phone down and gaze out of the window and admire the colourful sky, at the same congratulating yourself on your buying decision.
The luxury car market often dances to the tunes of German giants. However, breaking this rhythm with its own melodic and distinct note is the Volvo S90. Not just another sedan, the S90 combines Swedish aesthetics with world-class features, giving even the famed German trinity a run for their money. While its counterparts may have a significant market presence, the Volvo S90 beckons those who value individuality and subtle luxury. It’s not just a car; it’s a statement. But how does it fare when pitted against its formidable adversaries? Let’s explore.
Grace, elegance, and refinement are words that one can use to describe the Volvo S90. Unlike its counterparts, which often rely on aggressive lines and a sporty stance, the S90 chooses a path of understated elegance. The meticulously crafted exterior boasts a sleek silhouette, flowing lines, and a poised stance that subtly captures attention. The signature Volvo grille, embedded with the brand’s iconic emblem, takes center stage, seamlessly integrating with the mesmerizing “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights. From the side, the elongated wheelbase promises space, while the subtle contours hint at its aerodynamic prowess. The rear is a design masterpiece, with the bold ‘VOLVO’ lettering, sculpted tail lamps, and dual exhaust outlets, showcasing a blend of aesthetics and performance. With a selection of colors that range from the pristine Crystal White to the mysterious Onyx Black, the S90 ensures it resonates with every individual’s style.
Step inside the S90, and you are welcomed into a sanctuary of luxury. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in every corner of the spacious cabin. The attention to detail is evident in the meticulously stitched leather seats, the elegant wood trims, and the precise finish of each control. For those inclined towards modern technology, the highlight is the cutting-edge infotainment system anchored by Google Android. Dominated by a 9-inch touchscreen, this system offers everything from navigation to entertainment, ensuring every journey is connected and enjoyable. Voice commands make operations effortless, while Apple CarPlay support ensures iPhone users aren’t left behind. However, it’s not solely about the advanced tech. The spacious sunroof floods the cabin with daylight, the customizable ambient lighting sets the right mood, and the Bowers & Wilkins sound system ensures every note is pitch perfect. Comfort is paramount, with heated and ventilated seats, multi-zone climate control, and an array of adjustment options for seating and steering, making every drive a tailored experience.
The name ‘Volvo’ has always been synonymous with safety, and the S90 reinforces this legacy. Engineered with an uncompromising commitment to protect its occupants, every inch of the S90 is designed with safety in mind. Cutting-edge technologies work in tandem with traditional safety measures to create a protective bubble around the passengers. The City Safety system exemplifies Volvo’s proactive approach, scanning the environment for potential threats and taking preventive action when necessary. Whether it’s detecting a pedestrian on a busy street or identifying a cyclist on a blind turn, the S90 is always vigilant. Advanced features like the Pilot Assist not only enhance driving pleasure but also add an extra layer of safety by maintaining lane discipline and safe distances. Blind Spot Information System, Lane Departure Warning, and Road Sign Information further augment the S90’s safety arsenal. And for those tight parking spots? The 360-degree camera offers a panoramic view, ensuring every maneuver is safe and precise.
Volvo has seamlessly blended efficiency with performance in the S90. At its heart lies a 2.0-litre turbocharged powerhouse that doesn’t shy away when pushed. Delivering a robust 290 bhp and a torque of 420 Nm, the S90 can gracefully cruise highways and navigate city traffic with equal aplomb. But it’s not just about raw power; the integration of a mild-hybrid system adds an eco-friendly dimension. This 48-volt electric motor not only provides an extra thrust during overtakes but also enhances fuel efficiency through its regenerative braking system. The experience is further refined by the silky-smooth 8-speed automatic transmission, ensuring every gear shift is imperceptible and timely. The S90 strikes a balance between sporty responsiveness and responsible eco-driving, offering the best of both worlds.
The S90’s ride quality is nothing short of poetry in motion. It gracefully absorbs road imperfections, ensuring occupants remain cocooned in comfort. Whether you’re navigating the undulating countryside or the unpredictable city streets, the S90 remains unfazed. Its adaptive air suspension system continuously adjusts to road conditions, delivering a ride that’s both plush and poised. But comfort doesn’t come at the expense of handling. The sedan’s precise steering feedback and excellent grip inspire confidence in every turn. Drive modes can be toggled to suit one’s mood, shifting from a relaxed cruise to a spirited sprint. Despite its luxurious demeanor, the S90 has a sporty soul, evident in its agile handling and responsive brakes. Every journey becomes a joyride, with the S90 promising both thrill and tranquility.
The Volvo S90’s pricing strategy positions it as a compelling alternative in the premium mid-sized sedan segment. At Rs. 67.90 lakh for the petrol variant, it offers a competitive edge, especially when stacked against its formidable peers. The BMW 5-Series, for instance, is priced slightly lower for its petrol version at Rs. 65.40 lakh, while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class takes a higher slot with its petrol offering at Rs. 72.50 lakh. The Audi A6 comes with a range for its petrol variant, starting at Rs. 61.60 lakh and going up to Rs. 67.76 lakh.
However, the diesel narrative paints a different picture. While the Volvo S90 currently doesn’t offer a diesel variant, the BMW 5-Series has its diesel model priced at Rs. 68.90 lakh. Mercedes-Benz E-Class takes the lead in the diesel segment, with prices ranging from Rs. 73.50 lakh to a steeper Rs. 87.50 lakh. Audi, much like Volvo, opts out of a diesel variant for the A6.
In the grand scheme of things, the Volvo S90 presents a balanced proposition, being competitively priced amidst a segment dominated by German engineering. It ensures value for money without compromising on luxury, safety, or performance.
Choosing the perfect Volvo S90 variant isn’t just about ticking off features from a list; it’s about aligning your automotive needs with your lifestyle aspirations. Each variant of the S90 is meticulously crafted, embodying Volvo’s commitment to safety, luxury, and performance. The S90 B5 Ultimate, for instance, boasts a 1,969 cc engine displacement, producing 247 bhp at the rpm range of 5400-5700. Its mild hybrid system, incorporated with a 48-Volt battery, provides that additional kick, elevating the driving experience. With an 8-speed automatic transmission, the car promises smooth transitions and efficient power delivery. For those prioritizing performance with a touch of environmental consideration, the mild-hybrid variant stands out.
The luxury sedan market is fierce, with stalwarts like the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Audi A6 consistently vying for the top spot. Each brings its distinct brand legacy, engineering marvel, and design philosophy. The BMW 5-Series is often lauded for its driving dynamics and tech-laden interiors. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class remains a symbol of lavishness and luxury, often the first choice for those who prioritize sheer comfort in their drive. The Audi A6 continues to impress with its perfect balance between dynamic performance and technological prowess.

Excellent car, great features, but lacks attention to details and terrible service . From the back seat you can see the wires and the bus connector below the drivers seat. Dealership said all cars are similar they can’t do anything. Service is pathetic, every time car is in the service station it takes 5days minimum. And they don’t complete the work . After 35K kms noise from the rear seats side not resolved. The tyres get punctures much more frequently. Least botheration about service continues
