Expert Review on Tata Nexon
Pros
- 5-Star Gncap Rating
- Good Performance
- Spacious Cabin
Cons
- Amt Gearbox
- compact rear seat
The new Tata Nexon has a fresh, funky and a futuristic vibe to it! With the updates, it is now one of the best-looking cars in the segment, gets a boat load of features and continues to carry on with its proven petrol and diesel engines. It has the potential to upset the apple cart that is the subcompact SUV segment in India, being the tough and comfy car that it is! Should it be on your consideration list? The simple answer to that question is yes!
Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon comes with a brand new and stylish design template along with toning down its overall aggression considerably. The SUV has been successful for Tata Motors in the Indian market and stands out for its overall value proposition.
The Tata Nexon now has a more refined and sleek design with toned-down aggression throughout the exteriors. There are muscular touches yes, although this is somewhat reduced now as per the Impact 2.0 design template. The front fascia has been fully revamped along with integrating a new signature grille and sleeker bumper with a faux skid plate. There is also a revamped LED package option for the Nexon. The side is similar although the coupe-themed aerodynamic body is striking. There are new piano-black themes for the ORVMs while the alloy wheels have also been revamped. The rear gets revamped LEDs with badging at the centre now. The rear has always been quite unique.
Petrol | 1.2 litre | 120 PS | 170 Nm |
Diesel | 1.5 litre | 110 PS | 260 Nm |
The engines are the same 1.2 litre Revotron turbo petrol engine and the 1.5 litre diesel Revotorq engine. The power figures of the former are slightly better while the diesel engine remains unchanged. There are 6-speed AMT and manual transmission choices available for buyers. There are City, Eco and Sport driving modes available for these engines alongside. The engine seems a little sluggish until the 1800 RPM mark, although it becomes livelier after crossing this threshold. The Nexon can be planted on the highway and offers good stability at higher speeds. The diesel engine is reliable and refined while the petrol engine is also decent enough to drive.
- Diesel Manual- 21.19 kmpl
- Diesel Automatic- 22.07 kmpl
- Petrol Manual- 17.57 kmpl
- Petrol Automatic- 16.35 kmpl
The Tata Nexon offers superb ride and handling, while ensuring a slightly stiff low-speed riding experience over potholes, sharp bumps and other undulations. The ride quality is also good enough with the car remaining stable and composed over bad roads as well. The steering is also one of the top picks in the category while offering good feedback and feel alike. The Nexon offers high driving confidence alongside. The car has good braking as well.
The Tata Nexon comes with a new three-tone design along with a revamped dashboard which offers a plush look and feel. It has a revamped dashboard with the tri-arrow upholstery for the seats. The new central console looks luxurious and useful at the same time. There is also a flat-bottom steering wheel for a sportier option. The electric sunroof is the key highlight for the Tata Nexon while there is cruise control as well. The Xpress Cool feature is a handy touch, enabling special cool-down features for the cabin amidst extreme heat and humidity. There are rear AC vents along with automatic climate control and the 8-speaker audio system. Legroom is decent at the back and so is overall headroom and knee room.
The Tata Nexon comes with several technologies and features including automatic projector headlamps, tyre pressure monitoring system, rain-sensing wipers, new instrument console, three driving modes, wearable key, and the engine start/stop button. There is also a 7-inch touch screen infotainment unit with IRA connected technologies and telematics. One will also find features like remote vehicle control, live diagnostics reporting, find my car, tribe feature for connecting with owners, intrusion alerts, natural voice technologies with an understanding of Indian accents, what3words navigation, and reverse camera assist. There is an electric sunroof and an 8-speaker Harman audio unit present. One
Safety features on the Tata Nexon include roll-over mitigation, traction control, ESP, automatic headlamps, TPMS, automatic wipers, dual front airbags for all variants, and more. There are 6 and 7 airbag choices for the top-end trims. The Tata Nexon got a 5-star rating in the adult occupant protection category in the Global NCAP crash test along with a 3-star rating in the child occupant protection category.
One can take their pick from the XE, XM+, XM, XZA+, XZ+, and XMA variants. The XZ+ is the desired variant in this category offering more value for money along with features like the digital instrument cluster, infotainment unit (7 inches) with connectivity features, interior features, smart key with push-button features, automatic climate control and more. The petrol-manual version is the value pick in this category.
The rivals in the segment include the Mahindra XUV300, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Toyota Urban Cruiser, and the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza along with the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger. The Nexon is decently fuel efficient and comes with good features including excellent safety features (its rating is a plus point). The Sonet and Venue take it head-on in terms of features, while the XUV300 could make more sense at a slightly higher price band. However, the Nexon still stands out as a compelling proposition in the compact SUV category.
The Tata Nexon is a stylish and attractive SUV that is already synonymous with safety, great features, and good performance overall. The Nexon is everything that buyers want in a compelling package and stands out as a value proposition for buyers. The only thing is that it does not get a few features like wireless charging, ambient lighting, an air purifier, and some other kit. However, the feature list is still extensive and the petrol and diesel engines are powerful enough, while the ride quality is also top-notch. There is also good interior space. Yes, the petrol engine is not that fun and engaging to drive, especially in congested city traffic, the infotainment unit could have been better, and the Nexon could also have offered better quality of plastics inside. However, looking beyond these minor chinks in its armor, it seems to be unstoppable in the market at the moment.
should make it continue its successful run in the compact SUV segment.

It felt phenomenal at first test drive and we booked Nexon, first as its price was value-for-money than its rivals and it has a high ground clearance and high safety rating. Moreover, as it was December, the car was short of supply and only one petrol XZ was there with the dealer. The TATA dealership was a bit whack as they told us that we'll get LED DRLs with XZ, which is only available in XZ+ variant. A few other shitbits were there but overall they cooperated well. Now, coming to the car performance: The car is very fun to drive. I have driven it over 100kmph on a long trip and there was no discomfort in handling. It really glides smoothly even in city mode. The sport mode does give you a boost in performance which kinda makes overtaking easy peasy, which is quite visible when you rev lower in a higher gear. I have XZ petrol variant and I'm getting around 12-15 in city and over 18 on highway (both in city mode). The infotainment system is just nice where you can customize almost every feature like auto AC, Android Auto and other media sources. The connectivity with Bluetooth is flawless. Android Auto helps me with on-screen navigation. I didn't find it (the touchscreen) laggy as such. Harman Audio system literally explodes the audio and feels so soothing to ears. The other best thing is the ground clearance. I tried taking it off road on rocky surface and it just moved past it efficiently. The pickup is great in Sport mode, city mode is decent too. Engine noise is not there in the cabin. There's ample leg and head room both for front and rear seat passengers. The dashboard looks smooth and premium. Glove box is large and air cooled. Some of the down sides that I feel are: If you think mileage is important to you, this 'may' not impress you. The gearbox isn't the smoothest. There was lag at first but then I adapted according to it. The rear portion is too much overdone, which I personally do not like. The reverse camera takes some time to show up when reversing and the air vents throw hot air at higher speeds (not sure if it is natural). The XZ petrol costed me around 9 on-road after all discounts in December. Overall I'm quite satisfied with the car, having driven it 400 km as of writing. It's just that TATA needs to improve their customer relationship. Not that they argue or misbehave, but they could improve a lot. I'd suggest to go for either XZ or XZ+ model only as the lower end models lack quite some things which add to the worth of this car.

Excellent Dream Car
By Vasudev @ Feb 22, 2020 10:55 AM

Purchased Tata NExon XZ + diesel in Feb 2020. Below are my genuine opinions for helping new customers. PReviously i have Alto 800, Alto K10, Kwid RXL, Tata Tiago Cars. When you see Nexon from outside, looks are just royal and differ from all other day today SUVs. PEople just Stagger when i drive on village and city Roads, thats its one of speciality. Another thing i observed is that front coming vehicles decently takes his car at the side of road, to give side to tata NExon. that tells us how robust this car looks to outsiders. Car is very sturdy and stable, Stability and Power / Pickup on road is most appreciated. We need to drive safely as CAr is big and broad dimensions wise. This car is most suited for village roads, tar roads, mining roads etc where i can literally take this car abywhere and anytime. Infotainment system of car is superb. in villages you cant go above 4th gear as gear speed pattern is different. I have got milege of 24 on road while driving in all kind of roads upto 100 KMPL speed. Overall its a great car with value for money, defibitely different and unque from other cars/SUVs. I am very much impressed with Service given by Durga motors Goa. I had no douvt about service bcoz i am loyal Tata customer since TIago. Tata has made huge difference in Car world by providing such car in India. Hats off to tata and PRoud Owner.

This is my first car and i m so much in love with this big boy because of safest car in india as of today in this segment. Its worth and value for money. Tata has made such a good quality solid build car. Multi driving modes is superb choice and you feel the response immediately. Front seats are so good and most important is that rear seats are having much thigh support which is helpful in long driving. Mileage as on today i got 16.5kmpl which is really good keeping the weight 1200-1300kg. I was looking for baleno initially but then if u spend 1L extra, its worth single penny. In globabl NCAP crash teat, it scored 4star for adult and 3star for child occupant which even brezza got only 2 star for child occupant, whereas adult occupant is same as 4star... Looks fresh, sturdy design and good to drive. Excellent car. If u have budget of 7—8 just go for it... You will realise soon. To get actual mileage of car please drive for atleast 2k km. ???? Such a well build car in this range... Safety first and others are rest... Decent mileage with 16.5kmpl is reasonable in this range.

My experience till now is best.I don't know why some people still say bad about Tata cars.I would suggest if you have budget of 8-10 lakhs then just have a test drive of this vehicle rest you will know as my daily travel is just 15-20kms so I bought petrol Nexon but the diesel Nexon which is the beast I was surprised when I took test drive, I have taken test drive of Brezza, Creta , EcoSport and WRV but it was the Nexon which surprised me with its power. Coming to looks, every person has a different perception. Nexon and EcoSport best in looks.Nexon made a place in my mind in 2016 when I was saw this beautiful vehicle in autoexpo and I loved it since then. EcoSport is not the Value for Money Vehicle specially if want diesel engine. But for petrol you can have EcoSport an option if no budget constraint. I got Nexon XM petrol in just 8 lakhs and then installed accesories like fog lights(TATA) ,reverse camera ,dicky tray and roof rails in just ?22k

Proud to own the ONE

I owned a Nexon (P) XZ+ on April 2018. No doubt I was having a lot of question with its performance but the after driving around 8K km now I m very much satisfied with the vehicle. I don't have any issues with the performance of the vehicle. The driving comfort, stability, and balance and performance of the vehicle have impressed me all the time when I have hit the road. Went to Kodaikanal from Bangalore and Nexon Petrol gave a mind-blowing milage of 16.8 km/l. Getting a 5 star in NCAP has added to the safety of the car. Overall a nice vehicle to put your money on. Take once a test drive of Nexon before going for any other compact SUV or luxurious hatchback.

This proactive approach to safety significantly minimizes the risk of injury, emphasizing Tata's commitment to passenger protection.
Moreover, the Nexon is equipped with an advanced braking system comprising ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution). This cutting-edge technology enhances the vehicle's braking performance by preventing wheel lock-up during hard braking, ensuring stable and controlled stops. EBD plays a pivotal role in distributing braking force optimally among all wheels, thus elevating overall braking efficiency and safety.
A standout safety feature of the Nexon is its corner stability control system, which proves invaluable when navigating sharp turns, particularly at higher speeds. This innovative technology contributes to maintaining stability and control, significantly reducing the risk of rollovers or loss of control, thus elevating the safety of every drive.
Additionally, the Nexon offers a blend of convenience and safety with the inclusion of reverse parking sensors and a rearview camera. These advanced features assist drivers in maneuvering the vehicle confidently, particularly in tight spaces and while parking. These advanced features include hill hold control, electronic stability control, and roll-over mitigation, each contributing to a more confident and enjoyable drive.
Hill hold control is a standout feature that proves invaluable when navigating steep inclines. It prevents the vehicle from rolling backward when the driver transitions from the brake pedal to the accelerator on an uphill slope. This not only simplifies hill starts but also reduces the risk of accidents or collisions on inclines, making the Nexon a dependable companion in challenging terrains.
Electronic stability control (ESC) is another noteworthy inclusion that actively assists in maintaining the car's stability, especially during abrupt maneuvers or on slippery surfaces. ESC adjusts the braking force on individual wheels and modulates engine power to counteract skidding or loss of control. This ensures that the Nexon remains firmly planted on the road, even in adverse conditions, enhancing both safety and driver confidence.
Rollover mitigation is a feature designed to prevent the vehicle from tipping over during sharp turns or evasive maneuvers. It does so by applying the brakes selectively to specific wheels to counteract any potential rollover tendencies. This feature is particularly crucial in scenarios where sudden swerves or quick steering inputs are required, ensuring that the Nexon maintains its composure and stability.
Collectively, these driver-assist features in the Tata Nexon greatly contribute to an improved driving experience. They instill a sense of security and control, even in challenging driving conditions. Whether it's conquering steep hills with hill hold control, maintaining stability with electronic stability control, or preventing rollovers with roll-over mitigation, the Nexon's advanced safety technology ensures that occupants can enjoy a smooth, confident, and safe journey. These features are a testament to Tata Motors' commitment to providing not just a means of transportation but a vehicle that prioritizes the safety and well-being of its passengers, making the Tata Nexon a standout choice in its segment.
