The Toyota Hilux is offered only in the double-cab variant and shares underpinnings with the Toyota Innova Crysta as well as the Toyota Fortuner. It is spawned by the IMV-2 platform.

The heart of the Toyota Hilux is powered by the 2.8-litre, four-cylinder, diesel engine from the Fortuner that produces 201 bhp and 420 Nm of peak torque in the manual variant, while the automatic variant makes 500 Nm of peak torque. The Hilux also comes equipped with all drive-assist features including hill-assist, brake assist, hill descent control and electronic stability program (ESP), limited-slip differential, differential lock. It also has a water wading capacity of 700 mm.

The design of the Toyota Hilux is inspired from the Toyota Innova Crysta and so features hexagonal grille flanked, but is slightly larger than the latter, along with sweptback LED headlamps and LED DRLs. Moreover, it gets large front bumpers to go with its butch face. The 18-inch alloy wheels, flared wheel arches, side-step, body cladding very aptly maintain the rugged-ness of the Hilux. The LED taillights with blacked out wing mirrors and pillar add to its urban appeal. Toyota is offering the Hilux in Emotional Red, White Pearl, Silver Metallic, Super White, and Grey Metallic.

Verdict

Despite being an expensive option, the Hilux certainly offers good value. Yes, the limited number of features might prompt you to question the premium price tag, however, the SUV is not for everyone. It’s a purpose-built vehicle for those select few enthusiasts who not only want to take the car off the beaten path, but go beyond that, and experience the different terrains India has to offer. And in those regards, the Hilux checks all the right boxes.

With a lineage stretching over five decades, the Toyota Hilux isn’t just another vehicle on the road; it’s an embodiment of strength, durability, and legacy. Celebrated for its relentless perseverance in diverse conditions worldwide, the Hilux has transitioned from a utilitarian vehicle to an emblem of lifestyle. It stands tall, representing an indomitable spirit that resonates with adventure enthusiasts, business owners, and urbanites alike.

The Toyota Hilux exudes a commanding aura that’s impossible to overlook. Its design is a harmonious blend of ruggedness and elegance. From its muscular wheel arches to its broad, assertive grille, every inch screams dominance. The eye-catching ‘emotional’ red variant amplifies its grandeur, ensuring that wherever it treads, it leaves an indelible mark. While it doesn’t have the mystical prowess to part traffic, its presence on the road demands respect and admiration. The Hilux is a testament to Toyota's impeccable craftsmanship, seamlessly combining functionality with aesthetics. Whether parked amidst the urban chaos or against a serene rural backdrop, it stands as a symbol of power and precision.

Step inside the Hilux, and you are greeted with an interior that prioritizes purpose without compromising on comfort. While the cabin leans more towards the practical side, it doesn’t shy away from offering modern amenities. The responsive infotainment system, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensures you are always connected, entertained, and on the right track. The electrical adjustments for the driver’s seat add a touch of luxury, guaranteeing optimum comfort on every journey.

Despite its utilitarian roots, the Hilux doesn’t skimp on convenience. Storage spaces are thoughtfully integrated throughout the cabin, ensuring everything has its place. The dashboard-mounted coffee cup holder emerges as a delightful addition for caffeine enthusiasts always on the move. While the overall cabin ambiance might seem simplistic, it is this very simplicity that accentuates its functionality. Every feature, every element is designed with intention and purpose, echoing the Hilux’s core philosophy of efficiency and reliability.

In a world increasingly leaning towards opulence, the Toyota Hilux remains grounded, staying true to its roots while adapting to the modern world’s demands. Its unique blend of practicality and style ensures it remains a favorite across generations.

Toyota’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its passengers is vividly apparent in the Hilux. It’s not just about the robust exterior; inside, the Hilux is a fortress designed to safeguard its occupants. With a commendable inclusion of seven airbags strategically positioned throughout the cabin, the vehicle prioritizes all-around protection. Advanced safety features such as hill-descent control, limited slip differential, and electronic stability control further enhance its off-roading credentials. These features not only ensure superior control during challenging terrains but also offer peace of mind, reiterating the fact that in a Hilux, you are always in safe hands.

At the heart of the Toyota Hilux lies an engine that embodies relentless power and efficiency. Designed to conquer terrains, be it smooth highways or rugged off-road trails, the Hilux’s engine is a testament to Toyota’s engineering prowess. The 4x4 system with shift on the fly capability ensures seamless transition between terrains, ensuring optimal power distribution and traction. Whether you’re navigating steep inclines or meandering through muddy trails, the Hilux responds with eagerness and precision. Coupled with a robust suspension system, the vehicle offers a driving experience that is both exhilarating and reassuring, proving that it is indeed built to last.

Navigating the Hilux, given its imposing size, is a breeze, thanks to its responsive handling dynamics. Despite its sturdy build, the vehicle exhibits agility, effortlessly maneuvering through city lanes or vast open trails. The leaf-spring setup, predominantly designed for heavy cargo transportation, ensures durability. However, when the cargo bay is unladen, it might offer a slightly bouncy ride, but that’s a small trade-off for the incredible payload capacity it provides. The near 13-meter turning circle can be challenging in tight spaces, but with a bit of practice, even U-turns become second nature. On open roads, the Hilux cruises with unmatched stability, assuring passengers of a ride that’s smooth and enjoyable. Whether you are on an adventurous escapade or a routine city commute, the Hilux promises a ride that’s both comfortable and controlled.

The Toyota Hilux, with its myriad features and legendary durability, commands a price that reflects its premium stature in the market. With prices ranging from Rs. 30.40 lakh to Rs. 37.90 lakh ex-showroom, it’s positioned as a top-tier offering in the pickup segment. While some may argue that it’s a hefty sum, especially when compared to competitors like the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross, it’s crucial to consider the comprehensive package that the Hilux brings to the table. From its iconic design to the suite of advanced features, every aspect of the Hilux justifies its price tag. Moreover, the long-term reliability and resale value that Toyota vehicles are known for add significant value to the overall ownership experience.

Choosing the right variant of the Toyota Hilux largely depends on individual requirements and budget constraints. For those who prioritize basic utility and functionality without the need for added luxuries, the entry-level variants offer the essential Hilux experience without breaking the bank. The base models of the Hilux focus on delivering fundamental features, emphasizing robustness and performance tailored for all terrains.

For individuals with a preference for high-end luxury and the latest technology, the upper-end models of the Hilux are an enticing option. These variants feature cutting-edge infotainment systems, advanced safety measures, and a lavish interior that amplifies the driving experience. Though there might be a noticeable difference in price, the enhanced amenities and luxury provided justify the higher cost, particularly for those who foresee spending ample time in their Hilux.

For city dwellers who occasionally crave off-road adventures, the mid-range models serve as an ideal pick. They seamlessly merge everyday convenience with rugged capabilities. When selecting the perfect Hilux variant, consider your personal requirements, how you intend to use the vehicle, and your budget.

Its closest competitor in the market, the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross, offers a more affordable price range, capping off at Rs. 27 lakh. While the Hilux has its set of unique offerings, the significant price difference might sway potential buyers towards the V-Cross, especially those looking for value for money.

The Toyota Hilux Is a robust, capable machine, ideal for those seeking adventure and utility. However, its urban practicality is something potential buyers should consider, especially given its price point.
