Expert Review on Toyota Fortuner
Pros
- Massive Road Presence
- Powerful Engine Performance
- Also Gets 4X4
Cons
- Third Row Seat Is Not Spacious
- Interior Looks A Bit Dated
- Expensive Compared To Rivals
The Toyota Fortuner's commanding road presence is a defining attribute, contributing significantly to its longstanding status as a segment leader. Its robust and imposing stature not only captures attention on the streets but also symbolizes the vehicle's durability and reliability, factors that have consistently drawn buyers and established the Fortuner as a preferred choice in its class.
The Toyota Fortuner is a butch, powerful SUV car, which has always been the king of the premium SUV space in the country. The Fortuner has undergone a massive facelift in terms of its design and features sometime earlier.
The Toyota Fortuner now has a new front end as compared to the earlier model. The triple-slat front grille and wavy look may be carried over from the Lexus brand, while the headlamp internal portions have been changed, giving them an edgy look overall. There is generous chrome treatment for the chin of the vehicle which now has a more upright stance and the flatter design may also involve the bumper getting front clearance sonar. The housing for the fog lamps is uniquely positioned, while the horizontal LED daytime running lights are placed beneath the fog lamps are slightly vulnerable towards minor damages. The 18-inch alloy wheels now come with two options in terms of their design grades. The tail lamp cluster is brand new and looks wider with a chrome stripe positioned neatly with the Fortuner name.
Diesel | 2755 cc | 201.15 BHP | 500 Nm |
Petrol | 2694 cc | 163.60 BHP | 245 Nm |
The Toyota Fortuner still gets the same engines from the earlier version, namely the 2.8 litre turbo diesel and 2.7 litre turbo petrol engines. The former has been refined further for ensuring first-rate performance and power figures. Once you pair this to the 6-speed automatic transmission, it can generate decent figures and the manual version has a slight torque drop as well. This is possibly the most powerful and best such turbo diesel option in this entire category. The engine offers more refinement than before. The 6-speed manual gearbox is smooth-shifting as well. The 2.7 litre petrol engine has manual and automatic transmission choices as well. It is not as popular an option for buyers in this segment, although the engine offers good refinement levels. Yet, it does fall behind slightly in terms of mid-range responsiveness and performance.
- Petrol Manual- 10 kmpl
- Petrol Automatic- 10.3 kmpl
- Diesel Manual- 14.4 kmpl
- Diesel Automatic- 14.28 kmpl
The Toyota Fortuner offers a pleasing enough experience while driving. The ride quality is not impeccable as you would wish, since the ladder-frame build continues. However, the Fortuner offers great control, especially at higher speeds, if you factor in its overall size. It also offers great off-roading abilities with its 4x4 setup and also handles well on rough roads as well. The overall responsiveness is great while driving although you feel the size of the car at times, which means some body roll. However, it is a great highway cruiser with great stability and poise.
The Toyota Fortuner comes with 4x4 abilities and offers decent off-roading capabilities, while also coming with features like hill hold, hill descent, limited slip differential, active traction control, and more. The sizable torque figures of the engine are a boon for off-roading as well. The low-range gearbox is also suitable for off-roading, particularly across tough and uphill routes. There is also electronic drive control which enables selection of the range as per requirements, while automatically tweaking the same as well.
The Toyota Fortuner offers a comfortable interior for SUV lovers. Fully-black upholstery is available for buyers along with tan brown as well. There is a high-rise dashboard with revamped air conditioning vents alongside. The material quality is top-notch while the front seats have a great view of the road ahead. The seats are more comfortable now due to the electric adjustability feature and also the ventilation. The interiors otherwise look similar to the earlier model. The new instrument cluster is a nice touch with silver-colored inserts. The leather upholstery is also a welcome addition. Space is good in the first two rows and is decent in the third row. The cabin space is good with plenty of legroom and headroom, while knee room is also decent.
The Toyota Fortuner comes with a new color infotainment unit of 7 inches with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There are several connected car features including last parked location, real-time tracking, geo fencing, and more. The Legender variant even has wireless charging, several driving modes, a huge 9 inch touch screen, kick-activated tailgate (electric) and so on. The regular version misses out on the sunroof and wireless charging along with the automatic tailgate function.
The Toyota Fortuner comes with several safety features including 360-degree camera view, seven airbags, lane departure warning, dynamic cruise control, and a collision prevention system. The Fortuner also gets seat belt warnings, child seat anchors, child locks, speed-sensing door locks, over-speeding warning, anti-theft engine immobilizer, and central locking.
The Fortuner comes in 4x2 2.8 litre diesel (6-speed MT/AT) and 2.7 litre petrol (5-speed MT/6-speed AT) guises along with the 4x4 2.8 litre diesel (6-speed MT/AT) version. This additionally gets cruise control, hill-start assist, seven airbags, hill descent control, LED lights all around, the 8-inch touch screen, JBL audio setup, connected car features, cooled glove box and cruise control among others. It is the best option if you are looking to get the maximum value out of this SUV. The Legender is even costlier and comes with unique design touches both externally and internally. It also gets wireless charging and hands-free opening for the boot. However, it may not be the preferred choice for most customers.
The main rivals to the Toyota Fortuner in the segment include the Ford Endeavour, MG Gloster, and the Isuzu MU-X along with the Jeep Meridian. The Endeavour is the biggest rival with its powerful turbo-diesel engine, great features, and excellent brand value. The Gloster is also a good bet with a good engine line-up, several features including iSmart connected car features, ADAS, adaptive cruise control, and more, along with a competitive price point in the segment. The Isuzu MU-X comes with a similar price point, although the engines are slightly underpowered in comparison. However, it has good off-roading chops. The Jeep Meridian offers great features and a refined engine as well. All in all, the MG Gloster and Jeep Meridian are better propositions from a feature-standpoint, while the Fortuner could be a better pick in terms of off-roading, power, and overall performance.
The Toyota Fortuner has a lot of things going for it, including its reputation as a legendary off-roading SUV, its powerful engines, especially the diesel, which can impress even a connoisseur, and it’s commanding stance and design. The Fortuner is a tough and durable SUV with several new features. The safety features are top-notch while resale value is also excellent. However, the Fortuner is a costly proposition now while the Legender version may seem slightly under-equipped for its price. The ride quality still needs improvement, while there is quite a bit of body roll. Several features are still missing, including a sunroof. The quality of plastics is also suspect at some places. The mileage figures are also low for the petrol version. The 4x4 version is a lot more expensive than the 4x2 version now. Yet, for all its flaws, for sheer presence, power, and ruggedness alone, the Fortuner still manages to pull in SUV enthusiasts with aplomb.

The Toyota Fortuner, a renowned suv in the Indian market, is celebrated for its impressive ground clearance, which is a standout feature contributing to its off-road prowess. The ground clearance of the Toyota Fortuner in India is subject to variation, depending on the specific model and trim level selected. However, it generally falls within the range of 200-220mm. This figure is pivotal in defining the vehicle's capability, particularly in off-road conditions or when navigating challenging terrains.
Ground clearance is defined as the measure of the distance between the lowest part of the vehicle's chassis and the ground. In the case of the Toyota Fortuner , this substantial clearance allows it to excel in varied and demanding driving conditions, which are quite typical in India. The roads in India present a spectrum of challenges, including uneven rural paths, potholes, speed bumps, and, in some areas, treacherous off-road tracks. The Fortuner's high ground clearance ensures that the vehicle is less likely to suffer underbody scrapes or damage when confronting such obstacles, thus enabling a smoother and more reliable driving experience.
This elevated ground clearance not only protects the vehicle’s undercarriage in rough conditions but also contributes to improved approach and departure angles. These angles are crucial for effectively managing steep inclines and declines, making the Fortuner an ideal choice for both off-road enthusiasts and those who encounter varied terrains in their daily commute.
Moreover, the variation in ground clearance across different models and trims of the Fortuner allows Toyota to cater to a broad spectrum of customers with different needs and preferences. Some variants, particularly those geared towards off-road use, may prioritize higher ground clearance, while others might be optimized for urban driving with a slightly lower clearance, balancing off-road capability with on-road handling and comfort.
The Toyota Fortuner , a popular suv in India, has garnered a reputation for its exceptional handling and road performance, making it a favored choice for a wide range of driving conditions. Renowned for its balanced handling and commendable road manners, the Fortuner delivers a stable and composed ride experience that resonates well with Indian drivers.
One of the key aspects contributing to the Fortuner's road handling is its sophisticated suspension system. At the front, the vehicle features a double wishbone with coil spring setup, while the rear is equipped with a four-link rigid axle and coil spring setup. This combination is meticulously engineered to enhance the SUV's stability and ride quality. The front suspension, with its double wishbone and coil springs, provides excellent handling characteristics, particularly in terms of steering precision and cornering stability. This setup ensures that the Fortuner maintains a good balance between ride comfort and handling dynamics.
At the rear, the four-link rigid axle with coil springs plays a crucial role in delivering a smooth ride, especially over uneven road surfaces. This suspension setup is adept at absorbing road imperfections, which is particularly beneficial on Indian roads that can vary from well-paved highways to rugged rural paths. The rigidity of the rear axle also contributes to the vehicle's stability, particularly when carrying heavy loads or navigating through challenging terrains.
The Toyota Fortuner's handling is further complemented by minimal body roll and excellent grip levels. Despite its size and stature, the Fortuner demonstrates commendable agility and control, particularly in cornering situations. The minimized body roll is a result of the vehicle's well-tuned suspension and chassis design, which work together to keep the vehicle stable and grounded. This feature is particularly appreciated by drivers who value a sense of security and control, especially at higher speeds or during sudden maneuvers.
In addition to its suspension system, the Fortuner's overall design, including its weight distribution and aerodynamics, contributes to its stable and secure road handling. The vehicle's grip levels are enhanced by its quality tire selection and wheel design, which ensure good traction on a variety of road surfaces.
- The Toyota Fortuner in India boasts a steering system that combines hydraulic power assistance with rack-and-pinion technology, delivering a highly responsive and precise driving experience. This steering system is renowned for its ability to offer drivers exceptional control and handling. One of its standout features is its well-weighted feel, striking a balance between ease of use in tight urban spaces and confidence-inspiring stability at higher speeds. The Fortuner's steering system provides drivers with a sense of connection to the road, offering valuable feedback that aids in navigating various driving scenarios. Whether it's making nimble maneuvers in congested city traffic or cruising along highways, the Fortuner's steering system ensures that the driver's inputs are translated into precise and predictable actions, enhancing overall driving satisfaction. This level of responsiveness and precision is a testament to Toyota 's commitment to engineering excellence, catering to the discerning preferences of Indian drivers who value both ease of use and the assurance of having control over their vehicles. In summary, the Toyota Fortuner's steering system in India is designed to provide a responsive and precise driving experience, earning it a reputation for its exceptional handling and maneuverability in diverse driving conditions.
The Toyota Fortuner is indeed a versatile and spacious vehicle, designed to comfortably accommodate up to seven passengers, making it a popular choice among larger families or those requiring significant seating capacity. Its seating arrangement is meticulously crafted to ensure comfort for all passengers across three rows, reflecting Toyota's commitment to providing a comfortable and spacious interior environment.
In terms of cargo space, the Fortuner demonstrates its adaptability and practicality. When all seats are in use, it offers a boot space of 296 litres, which is adequate for everyday use and can hold a fair amount of luggage or groceries. This utility is further enhanced by the Fortuner's flexible seating arrangements. By folding down the third row of seats, the boot space expands considerably to 716 litres, offering a much larger area for storage. This feature is particularly beneficial for longer trips where extra luggage capacity is needed or in scenarios that require transporting bulky items.
The Fortuner's capability for space management doesn't end there. For those times when maximum cargo space is a necessity, folding both the second and third rows opens up a substantial 1080 litres of space. This level of flexibility makes the Fortuner an excellent choice for transporting large items or for activities that require significant cargo capacity, such as camping or sporting events.
The vehicle's dimensions contribute to its overall functionality and presence. The Fortuner has a wheelbase of 2745 mm, which not only provides a spacious interior but also plays a crucial role in ensuring a stable and smooth driving experience, particularly important for a vehicle of its size. Its length of 4795 mm and a width of 1855 mm make for an imposing stance on the road, further emphasizing its robust and durable design.
The Toyota Fortuner, while not classified as a luxury cars in the traditional sense, stands as a symbol of premium automotive craftsmanship, particularly in the Indian market. This robust off-roading suv , equipped with seven seats, merges the practicality of a family vehicle with the ruggedness required for challenging terrains. Its popularity in India is not just a testament to its capabilities but also to the lifestyle statement it represents. With a price range of Rs. 32.59-50.34 lakh (ex-showroom), the Fortuner competes financially with several entry-level luxury car models, placing it in a unique position within the automotive market.
What makes the Toyota Fortuner a standout choice is its amalgamation of space, power, and comfort. The vehicle offers an expansive interior, commonly referred to as 'acres of space', providing ample room for passengers and cargo alike. This spaciousness, combined with high ground clearance, makes it an ideal choice for both urban driving and more adventurous off-road journeys. The Fortuner’s engine power is another critical aspect, offering a driving experience that is both smooth and robust, catering to the needs of those who seek a vehicle that performs well under various conditions.
The aspect of comfort and convenience is not overlooked in the Fortuner. It is equipped with features that provide a luxurious feel, contributing to its perception as a luxury proposition among those who favor large SUVs. The attention to detail in the design and the inclusion of modern amenities enhance the overall driving and passenger experience, aligning it with what one might expect from higher-end luxury vehicles.
Moreover, the Toyota Fortuner holds an impressive resale value, a testament to its enduring appeal and reliability. Even older models of the Fortuner can fetch prices ranging from Rs. 15-20 lakh, highlighting the vehicle’s sustained value over time. This high resale value is not just a financial benefit for owners but also reflects the enduring trust and preference for the Fortuner brand among Indian consumers.

The top-end GR-S model, for instance, gets safety features like seven airbags, child locks, seat belt warnings, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, speed-sensing door locks, middle-rear three-point seatbelt, central locking, over-speed warning, and a lot more. Toyota’s legendary build quality and the ladder-on-frame chassis also make it one of the safest in its segment.
The Toyota Fortuner, a formidable presence on Indian roads, boasts a comprehensive safety feature set, including the crucial Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). This sophisticated safety technology is integral to the Fortuner's braking system, designed to prevent wheel lock-up during instances of intense braking.
The ABS functionality is a paramount safety measure, especially during emergency braking scenarios. By modulating brake pressure, ABS prevents the wheels from ceasing rotation and entering a skid. This not only ensures optimal control over the vehicle but also enhances overall stability, contributing significantly to accident prevention.
In the context of the Indian automotive landscape, where diverse road conditions and unexpected challenges are par for the course, the inclusion of ABS in the Toyota Fortuner underscores the brand's commitment to delivering a secure and reliable driving experience. This feature aligns with global safety standards and addresses the imperative of navigating Indian roads with confidence.
For consumers seeking a premium SUV with a robust safety infrastructure, the Toyota Fortuner's inclusion of ABS is a testament to Toyota's dedication to prioritizing safety without compromise. As a result, the Fortuner stands as a beacon of reliability, offering both performance and peace of mind to drivers and passengers alike.
