What's New?
Mahindra has been quite a famous car manufacturer, especially in the Indian market. It has earned its reputation by producing some of the best and robust vehicles for transport. However, recently it made its mark in the truck industry by coming up with the Mahindra Bolero camper. This premium vehicle serves both commercial as well as personal purposes. Along with that, this 5-seater cargo truck is reasonably priced. It comes in two variants, one which is a 2 wheel drive model, while the other is a 4-wheel drive model. The lowest 2-wheeler model comes at a price of Rs. 7.35 lakh, while the Bolero Camper Gold ZX comes at 7.9 Lakhs. All these models are diesel versions and have a manual 5-speed transmission.
This is a camper truck version of the Mahindra Bolero, which came out in the year 2008. In 2020, Mahindra has revisited the same car but improved on several things and has come out with a 5-seater camper truck. While there is no boot, the cargo box is quite spacious and can fit almost anything you throw at it. With whopping dimensions of 1481 x 1532 x 750 mm (L x W x H), it is quite a versatile vehicle to have. Even though it does not come with foldable rear seats, with so much cargo space, you will not necessarily need to do that. You also get smaller but convenient storage spaces inside the cabin, which can fit small objects like your phones or magazines.
Mahindra has some of the most amazing features catering to both personal as well as commercial needs. It comes with luxurious and premium comfort features like a potent air-conditioning system, power windows, central locking, and leather seats. Along with that, they also offer the option of customising the truck as per the customer's needs.
The exterior of the Mahindra Bolero camper has somewhat been revamped to fit the dimensions of the car. While the front is fairly similar to the Bolero, the new wider grille and fenders make it look a lot more muscular. That said, the headlights and rest of the body are pretty much similar to the earlier models. The rear side of the vehicle, however, has got some major changes. First of all, the rear seating capacity has been reduced to fit a cargo box. Nevertheless, since this is a camper truck, the cargo box makes more sense than adding more seating capacity.
Due to all such changes, Mahindra had to make certain changes to the suspension of the car to ensure better driving quality. Stiffer suspensions make it easier for the car to absorb shocks and bumps. Along with that, it makes for much more comfortable ride quality. Such a versatile suspension system also makes this car perfect for both off-roading as well as city rides. Along with that, you also get power steering making it more controllable at both high and lower speeds.
The Mahindra Bolero camper comes with a powerful yet efficient m2DiCR 4 cylinder 2.5 Litre Turbocharged engine. With a maximum torque of 200 Nm @ 1400-2200 rpm and a maximum power of 56 Kw @ 3200 rpm, this engine is really the best in class. It further allows you to add a payload of 1000 Kgs on an average on the cargo box and carry it safely. The engine also comes with BS-VI emission compliance which makes the car a much better option than the others in the industry. All that said, you can get a mileage of 17 KM/L on the diesel variant of this car.
What helps this car stand out in the market is the fact that it comes at a much more reasonable price than its competitors, without compromising on comfort, ride quality, and any features that you might find in other cars of the same segment. Along with that, you also get customisable options and a hoard of colours to choose from.
Expert Review on Mahindra Bolero Camper
Pros
- Low maintenance
- Rugged and tough vehicle
- 7 seater
- Attractive price point
Cons
- Fit and finish needs improvement
- NVH levels
- Looks dated
Mahindra is a well-known automaker, particularly in the Indian market and has established a stellar reputation by creating some of the greatest and most durable transportation vehicles. However, it finally cemented its position in the truck market by developing the Mahindra Bolero camper. Mahindra and Campervan Factory have partnered at a time when self-tourism is on the rise in the nation and gives a fantastic opportunity to capitalize on the market and offer an affordable but premium camper option.
How’s the design?
This car serves a purpose- camping. So, you should not expect it to look like a luxury SUV. The box-like shape of the passenger area is well designed and gives ample space for long journeys. The exteriors suit the purpose of the vehicle, with great ground clearance, sturdy suspension and a high bonnet height making it perfect for a bit of off-road adventure as well. Considering the vehicle's external facade there is nothing to grab your attention but is perfectly crafted to suit the purpose of the camper. The camper, but unfortunately, comes in one colour only known as the Java Brown and could have used more options.
How does it perform?
This engine is indeed the best in its class with a maximum torque of 200 Nm at 1400–2200 rpm and a maximum power of 56 kW at 3200 rpm. Additionally, the Mahindra Bolero camper has a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder m2DiCR supercharged engine that is both powerful and effective. The Mahindra Bolero is also a powerful vehicle for lengthy journeys; this is an essential feature contributing to its popularity as the vehicle of choice for official excursions used by government agencies. The engine has excellent performance and can operate for prolonged periods of time, at a respectable speed of more than 80 KMPH.
How’s the mileage?
The Mahindra Bolero Camper comes in 3 variants and all the variants use a diesel engine; petrol options are not available for the time being. The camper has a large 57.0 L tank perfect for long journeys and comes.
Variant Name | Transmission type/ Fuel | Millage |
2WD Power Steering BS6 | Manual + Diesel | 13.9 KM/L |
4WD Power Steering BS6 | Manual + Diesel | 13.9 KM/L |
GOLD ZX 2WD BS6 | Manual + Diesel | 13.9 KM/L |
How’s the driving experience?
All in all, the Mahindra bolero camper is a loading truck in disguise and is suitable for commercial use. If you enjoy SUVs, the Bolero camper is a nice choice, but if you're looking for a solid city car with good fuel economy, a tight turning circle, soft suspension, superb vision, and light steering, seek elsewhere. Bolero camper is frequently used for off-roading, particularly in rural locations. A few more comfort elements, such as a nicer seat and a more convenient power window button location, would have been nice inclusion to the specs. The power train is faultless, one of the greatest engines, and consistently dependable owing to Mahindra's great expertise in transportation vehicle manufacturing and high quality/ Dependable diesel engine.
How is its off-road capability?
Undoubtedly, one of the best vehicles for off-road driving in the Indian market is the Mahindra Bolero Camper. When compared to other SUVs, the price is reasonable along with excellent comfort. The front end of the Bolero 4x4 features leaf springs, while the 4x2 is Independent and further supported for genuine off-roading, the Bolero also has a differential lock with low- and high-gear ratios. Converting 2 WT to 4 WT is problematic since Mahindra does not sell a 44 BS6 version of the Bolero and it is not possible to convert a 2WD to a 4WD Bolero.
What’s the interior like?
The interiors of the bolero camper are clean and are made for convenience, not luxury but do provide the necessary comfort for long expeditions. To ensure that the inside remains cool and comfortable no matter the weather outside, the Bolero Camper is also equipped with an air conditioner. The beige finish of the seats and dashboard gives the vehicle a premium feel and the major USP is the enormous space for the back-seat passengers making it perfect for camping expeditions.
Tech and infotainment
Mahinda Bolero Camper has nicely used Faux-leather seats with headrests, recliners, and sliders, as well as power steering, central locking, power windows, centre console, ELR seat belts, vehicle immobilizers, traction assist and mobile chargers, which are additional options available on this beautiful camper.
Safety Equipment
In its entry-level model specs, the Mahindra Bolero Camper comes with extremely fundamental safety features including an engine immobilizer, central locking, and child safety locks. In addition to the equipment offered in the base versions, the top-end models include driver and passenger airbags, traction control, and ABS on the back axle. However, there is only one airbag for the driver, and there are no passenger curtain airbags which is a bummer.
Which variant to buy?
The 2WD Power Steering Mahindra Bolero Camper is the model with the lowest price of Rs. 9.27 lakh, while the Mahindra Bolero Camper GOLD ZX 2WD fetches the highest possible price of Rs. 9.76 lakh. However, 4WD Power Steering BS6 offers the best value for the money and is the most recommended.
Which cars compete in this segment?
The camper segment in the Indian market is basically untouched and is an untapped market slowly picking up speed. The Bolero Camper is a class apart with limited competition. The Brezza, Creta, Nexon, and the Venue are the main competitors of Mahinda’s Camper but are hard to compare due to Bolero's specific utility specification mostly adhering to off-road capability missing in the counterparts. Luxury may not be the pivot point of the camper but has one of the best build vehicles in the range.
Verdict (Value for money)
In the Indian market, the Mahindra Bolero camper has a particularly significant resale value which we all look for. On Indian highways over the past ten years, the Mahindra Bolero has fared admirably. Its value for both city driving and off-roading has been established. It continues to be in high demand thanks to its dependable high-performance engine and strong body. But when it comes to rough utility, the Bolero is a solid SUV that offers good value for the money. Because service and replacement parts are fairly inexpensive, maintenance is also quite low. Additionally, this strong SUV from Mahindra has 4X4 capabilities, making it the ideal choice for extended road trips.
