What's New?
Mercedes-Benz India has expanded its AMG portfolio with the launch of the new AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+. It is the world’s hottest hatchback on sale right now and packs absolutely monstrous power under its bonnet. It’s based on the standard new-generation A-Class hatch and arrives in India only in the AMG avatar. The A 45 S also sits above the A 35 and the GLA 35 AMG models in the brand’s line-up. The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ comes to India as a Completely Built Unit.
The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S uses the world’s most powerful four-cylinder engine in series production. The 2.0-litre twinscroll turbocharged motor has been developed at Affalterbach, home of AMG, and is built under the one engine, one mechanic philosophy. The motor develops 415 bhp at 6,750 rpm and 500 Nm of peak torque between 5,000-5,250 rpm. The motor is paired with the AMG Speedshift DCT 8G automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels via the 4MATIC+ system.
Compared to the standard AMG A-Class, the A 45 S AMG comes with two special modes Race and Drift along with five other driving modes. It also gets a reworked suspension, bigger brakes and an AMG steering wheel. The hot hatchback rides on the massive 19-inch alloy wheels that help you stay planted at high speeds. 0-100 kmph comes in 3.9 seconds while the top speed is electronically limited to 270 kmph. The A 45 S specifically gets the AMG Driver’s package as standard. The AMG Track Pace option further allows owners to personalise the car on track with a personal racing engineer function integrated into the MBUX system. This further offers more analytical data for you to study and perform better on the track.
Visually, the new Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC+ gets notable upgrades. The Panamericana AMG grille takes centre-stage with the Multibeam LED headlights and the twin haunches on the bonnet hat look muscular and striking. The wheel arches have been flared to accommodate the AMG alloy wheel and further add to the imposing presence. At the rear, you get the LED wraparound taillights along with quad exhaust pipes.
The AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ measures 4445 mm in length, 1850 mm in width, 1412 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2729 mm. The ground clearance stands at 113 mm (unladen). The boot capacity stands at 370 litres with 40/20/40 split rear bench.
With respect to the cabin, the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ comes with sports seats with yellow highlights and contrast stitching at the front. The seats are upholstered in black ARTICO leather. The model also gets dual screens for instrument console and infotainment unit. It runs the MBUX system and comes with all sorts of settings. The feature list comprises auto climate control, ambient lighting, rear AC vents, panoramic sunroof, head-up display, AMG dials on the steering wheel and more. The car also gets a high-end, 590 Watt Burmester sound system with 12 speakers.
The safety kit on the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ includes Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, among other active and passive safety systems.
Mercedes-Benz is also offering personalisation packages on the new A 45 S AMG under its Designo program that brings new colours, AMG Exterior Silver Chrome package, customised front splitter inserts and more. The hot hatch is available in nine colours - Sun Yellow, Polar White, Mountain Grey, Denim Blue, Iridium Silver, Designo Patagonia Red, Designo Mountain Grey Magno and Cosmos Black and Night Black.
Expert Review on Mercedes-AMG A 45
Pros
- Sexy looks and stunning to look at
- The A45 is the hottest hatch money can buy
- The A45 hatchback is fast and sounds great too
Cons
- Suspension is too stiff and hence not comfortable
- It is the most expensive hatchback in the country
- The automatic gearbox is a little sluggish in initial acceleration
The AMG A45 S of course is the world's hottest. We say hottest, we mean to say powerful, because there will certainly be leaving a trail of fire as it shoots across the streets. All four wheels get power thanks to the 4Matic all-wheel drive system and it's the 8-speed dual clutch transmission that provides the power to them. The A45 features six driving modes - Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Slippery, Individual and Race. It can do a 0-100 kmph run in just 3.9 seconds and that's fast, really fast!
When you think of Mercedes-AMG, you might picture roaring V8s, thrilling speed, and opulent interiors. Yet, sometimes dynamite comes in small packages. Enter the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4Matic+, a hot hatch that defies its compact dimensions to deliver an exhilarating performance. With a sticker price north of Rs. 1 crore, this German marvel prompts the question: Is it worth the premium? Let’s dive in.
From the moment you lay eyes on it, the A 45 S announces its presence with an elegant ferocity. The AMG-specific grille and the revamped LED daytime running lights serve as subtle updates from the outgoing model. With 19-inch AMG alloy wheels and a glossy black exterior replete with bold rear diffusers and quad-tip exhausts, this hot hatch appears every bit an AMG as its larger siblings. The all-black rear Aerofoil accessory adds a zesty touch and an aerodynamic edge. It’s not just a car; it’s a showstopper on wheels.
Step inside, and you are enveloped in a luxurious cocoon that screams sportiness. The new black and silver trim, referred to as the Aluminium AMG design, blends seamlessly with the touch-sensitive controls on the Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel. The infotainment system comes with a pair of 10.25-inch screens, running the latest-generation MBUX system. Although the manual steering adjuster feels somewhat outdated, the power-adjustable AMG performance seats, 64-color ambient lighting, and enhanced USB charging make up for it.
In a world where speed and power often steal the limelight, the safety features of the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4Matic+ serve as a potent reminder of Mercedes-Benz’s holistic approach to car design. Beyond the standard suite of seven airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a rear-view camera, the A 45 S offers advanced safety tech that takes its protective role seriously.
Active Lane Keeping Assist ensures that the vehicle stays within its lane, gently steering you back if you happen to veer off-course. It’s not just about keeping you safe but also about protecting everyone on the road. Then comes the Active Brake Assist, which uses radar and camera systems to detect potential collisions. Should the system predict an imminent crash, it can initiate braking, reducing the impact or potentially avoiding it altogether. Active Parking Assist rounds off the safety package, taking the hassle out of parking with sensors and automated guidance, ensuring you and your premium vehicle stay unscathed.
Powering the A 45 S is a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, churning out an astounding 415 bhp. Though the turbo lag is noticeable at lower revs, once you cross the 2500 rpm mark, the engine roars to life with unabated ferocity. The 8-speed AMG Speedshift DCT transmission ensures quick, precise shifts, aligning perfectly with the car’s high-performance persona.
The ride and handling of the A 45 S are where the car truly distinguishes itself as an AMG. The multiple driving modes—from Comfort to Race—aren’t mere names; they fundamentally transform the car’s behavior. Comfort mode dampens the suspension and softens the throttle response, making city drives as serene as a Sunday morning. The exhaust note is muted, allowing for a composed and comfortable driving experience.
Switch to Sport or Sport+, and the car instantly tightens up. The suspension firms, the steering wheel feels more direct, and the exhaust note takes on a thrilling growl. Here, the car’s agility comes to the forefront; it becomes a vehicle that responds to your every input with keen alertness. Corners are not merely taken; they are devoured. The high-speed stability is commendable, and even at triple-digit speeds, the car maintains its composure, providing an assurance that enhances your driving confidence.
Then comes Race mode, tailor-made for those track days when you want to unleash the full power of the A 45 S. With all settings turned up to eleven, the car becomes a track monster, ensuring your lap times will be the subject of envy. Despite its raw power, the car never feels unruly, thanks to its responsive steering and high levels of grip.
Priced at Rs. 92.50 lakh ex-showroom, the A 45 S is an expensive proposition. The car doesn’t have a direct rival in the Indian market, but if you are exploring options, the recently launched BMW M2, priced at Rs. 98 lakh, serves as a compelling alternative.
Unlike many cars that confuse with a plethora of trim options, the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4Matic+ keeps it straightforward: there is just one, fully-loaded variant available. However, you do have the option to accessorize. Among these, the rear Aerofoil accessory is one you should consider seriously. It adds to the aesthetic sportiness of the car and also provides aerodynamic advantages, further enhancing the car’s already impressive handling capabilities.
Opting for this accessory could be seen as the cherry on top for an already feature-packed, high-performance vehicle. Given the car’s high price point, this additional customization ensures you are extracting maximum value and enjoyment from your investment. In summary, with the A 45 S, Mercedes-AMG provides a well-rounded package right from the get-go, but for those looking to add that extra bit of flair and performance, the Aerofoil makes for a wise pick.
While the A 45 S stands in a league of its own in India, the newly launched BMW M2 is catching eyeballs. With a more powerful engine and an optional manual gearbox, the M2 presents a tempting alternative for performance enthusiasts, even if it comes at a slightly higher price point. The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4Matic+ is more than just a hot hatch; it’s a statement of engineering prowess and luxury. While the high price tag may deter some, for those willing to pay for unmatched performance in a compact package, the A 45 S ticks all the right boxes. It truly is a pocket rocket that brings the thrill of high-performance driving into everyday life.
